Meerkerk

The town hall of Zederik is located in Meerkerk, which together with Ameide, Tienhoven, Leerbroek, Lexmond, Nieuwland and Hei- en Boeicop forms the municipality of Zederik. Meerkerk lies on the border of the Alblasserwaard and Vijfheerenlanden en originated on the bog stream Zederik. This was widened and deepened to become Zederikkanaal. In 1880 it was further expanded to become the Merwedekanaal.

Just outside the village is the Bonkmolen, one of the finest smockmills in Zuid-Holland. Meerkerk is a much-favoured spot for water recreation; in the summer months the Merwedekanaal here is filled with boats passing through. Meerkerk lies both on the Vijfheerenlandenroute and the Ooievaarsroute [Stork route], two signposted cycle routes to the east and west of the village.
