Historic waters and the Staande Mast route
The Staande Mast route, the Mast-up route, is 114 km long, and stretches from the IJssel Lake to Hollands Diep. Of old the waterways of this route carried people and commodities; today, they connect the towns and cities with the surrounding landscape.
Zuid-Holland from the water
Via these stunning Zuid-Holland waterways, you will pass canals, dykes, polders and villages. Marvel at the stunning views of the Zuid-Holland polder landscape, as well as the many bridges, sluices and works of art enroute . In addition, the route travels past traditional Dutch towns and cities such as Dordrecht, Schiedam, Gouda and Leiden, which are all well worth a visit.
The Year of Historic Waterways
To emphasise the historic and economic importance of waterways, the province of Zuid-Holland has heralded 2010 as the Year of Historic Waterways. Would you like to explore these historic waterways in 2010? If so, then the Staande Mast route is the way to do so . The Hollandse IJssel, De Gouwe, the Old Rhine and De Zijl are all part of the Staande Mast route.
